Chapter 11

Lucas woke to his phone vibrating across his nightstand. Rolling over, he rubbed and blinked his eyes, noting the darkness still surrounding him. He fumbled for his phone.

Fuck, this better be good.

Squinting his eyes, he swiped the screen, trying to read it. His eyes flew open when he saw Jordan’s name. Lucas sat up and read his message.

Call me as soon as you wake up. Please. I need you.

Less than half a second passed before Lucas pressed the button to call Jordan.

“Lucas?” Jordan answered, his voice soft, barely above a whisper.

“Babe, what is it? What’s wrong?”

“I… I was going to go alone, but I can’t. I’ve been up all night thinking about it.”

Lucas heard Jordan’s sharp intake of breath through phone followed by a hoarse cry.

“I haven’t been back in ten years.”

“You haven’t been where in ten years?” Lucas asked.

A long silence followed.

“Jordan?”

“Talitha.” Jordan paused again. “I haven’t been to see Talitha in ten years. Not since she died. She was my best friend, Lucas.” Jordan’s voice cracked.

“I’m on my way over.”

Jordan let out a heavy sigh. “No. It’s four a.m. I’m glad you called, but I can wait a few more hours. I’m sorry I woke you.”

“You don’t get a choice in this one. I’m on my way over, so be ready to let me in when I get there.”

Lucas switched to his earpiece, keeping Jordan on the phone while he threw on a T-shirt and jogging pants. He slipped on a pair of flip-flops and shoved his wallet in his pocket, then headed toward the elevator. Once outside, he hailed a cab, not wanting to wake Miles this early in the morning, and arrived at Jordan’s house a few minutes later.

He climbed the steps inside as quietly as he could, reaching Jordan’s door seconds later.

“I’m at the door,” Lucas said, still on the phone with Jordan.

The door opened, revealing his tired and heartbroken boyfriend.

“Hey,” Jordan whispered.

“Hey,” Lucas said, stepping inside and immediately pulling Jordan into a hug.

Jordan circled his arms around Lucas, squeezing him tighter than he ever had before, and buried his face in the curve of Lucas’ neck. Lucas eased the door closed until it clicked shut. They stood in the entry in each other’s warm embrace for what felt like hours before Jordan loosened his hold. He stepped back and took Lucas’ hand, then led him to his bedroom and closed the door. Without releasing his grip on Lucas, Jordan tugged him to the bed and sat on the edge. Lucas took a seat beside him.

The silence lingered.

“Talk to me, babe,” Lucas whispered.

More silence. Lucas was about to speak again when Jordan started.

“Ten years ago today, my best friend completed suicide. Her name was Talitha, and she was only seventeen. She was in the foster system for years, but was never adopted. I remember asking my parents if they could adopt her, but they couldn’t afford it. I remember her telling me no one would ever love her and how lucky I was to have my parents.
